Hi! Welcome to our blog!
Today we'll be talking about an event that happened not too long ago.
Our friends at Western University asked us to make around 70 centerpieces for an event that they would host in November of 2019, and we were delighted to help. The theme for their event was, "Shoot For The Stars!" so we wanted to make sure the arrangements we made represented that message as well. We all agreed that a tall centerpiece, with sparkles and blues would make the perfect centerpieces. So, Sherwood Florist started planning.
An event like this one is no easy matter. Planning is essential. Our first step was choosing flowers with Western University for the arrangements. Once we did that, we had to special order the flowers months in advance from our local suppliers, since some plants aren't available all year round. Next we had to order our other supplies, such as trumpet vases, liners, and floral foam for the event. All the supplies are very expensive, and it is important to keep track of all expenses, including labor. Trumpet vases alone are $30- 40 a piece, so before you accept any event request, make sure to sit down and make a detailed list of all the expenses you will run into.
Two days before the event, we began making the top arrangements of the centerpieces. Between 3 designers, it took 8 hours for both days. The hydrangeas were placed in the arrangements on the day of the event, to prevent the flowers from dehydrating and lasting longer. We like to pre-treat the hydrangeas before use by soaking them in cold water, or give them an ice bath so they last longer. The bottom of the arrangements (the vase portion) would have to be assembled on-site at the event due its cumbersome nature. So, the day of the event, we loaded up our vans with the centerpieces, vases, gel beads, and extra flowers and materials.
Once we arrived we began assembling the vases, cleaning and buffing them before placing the orchids, water, and gel beads and lights in them. Completing the centerpieces took about 5 hours with the help and organization of 6 of our team members. Once we finished, we had to place all the arrangements on the 60+ tables and then we were done! We cleaned up and went back to the shop.
In conclusion, this event was challenging and fun. We had to work very hard, work as a team, and keep organized to make these arrangements come to life. An event like this isn't easy, but we are so happy we got to be a part of it! Special thanks to Western University, we had a blast! We also made a video! In this video, Sherwood Florist shows you how to create our tall, luxury glowing centerpiece that we call, "Amat". We take you step-by-step in this tutorial and show you the materials, plants, and how we created this beautiful, tall and glowing custom arrangement, let us know what you think!
